Beach clean-up organised to Commemorate Mandela Day
The staff of South African Embassy along with volunteers from different walks of life took part in a clean-up drive at Al Hail Beach on Saturday. The drive was titled, ‘Take Action, Inspire Change: Make everyday a Mandela Day’.
The day is commemorated every year to honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela and his values, through volunteering and community service.
H E Manabile Shogole, South Africa’s Ambassador to Oman said, “By devoting 67 minutes of their time – one minute for every year of Nelson Mandela’s public service – people can make a small gesture of humanity and contribute towards the global movement for good.
“The Nelson Mandela International Day (or Mandela Day) is an annual event held in honour of former South African President Nelson Mandela. It is celebrated every year on July 18 to commemorate Mandela's birthday. The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009, with the first UN Mandela Day held on July 18, 2010.”
The embassy will also be conducting a blood donation drive at its premises as part of the event.
