90-92mn Years old tooth of Marine Dinosaur Discovered in Oman

A tooth of a fossilised mosasaur (a marine reptile) from the Cretaceous period and fossilised timber have been found in Buraimi.

Speaking to Muscat Daily , Geologist Dr Mohammed Hilal al Kindi said, “A fossilised crab from the site of the tooth of the marine dinosaur has also been recovered.”

Dr Kindi said that Majid bin Khalfan al Muqbali, a teacher of geography and researcher in geology and archaeology, Ministry of Education has discovered the tooth estimated to be about 90-92mn years old. “This is the first-of-its-kind discovery in the GCC region.

Oman has rocks from the Cretaceous period which were formed from sediments deposited by lakes and rivers in the north of the sultanate. These deposits date back to about 70mn years at the end of the Cretaceous period when dinosaurs became an extinct species.”

He said that the discovery is important for several reasons. “We have found teeth of dinosaurs in Al Khoudh and Fanja but this is the first time that a tooth of marine dinosaur has been found.”
