Alex Ferguson paid over £12m for his signature despite the fact he had just scored three league goals in Portugal. He opened his account for United with a free kick before going on to score three more goals in his first season at Old Trafford. However, it was not until 2006-07 that he really made a breakthrough, netting 17 times in the league and then 31 the following season.
