Michelle calls President Trump -’’America’s Bad Parent’’

Former US First Lady Michelle Obama has suggested that President Donald Trump is like America's 'bad parent', making decisions in order to be liked, and not thinking about the long-term consequences of his actions.

"For the eight years Barack was President, it was like having the 'good parent' at home. The responsible parent, the one who told you to eat your carrots and go to bed on time," she said at the Simmons Leadership Conference in Boston on Thursday, according to PEOPLE.

"Now we have the other parent. We thought it’d feel fun, maybe it feels fun for now because we can eat candy all day and stay up late, and not follow the rules."

Obama, who is working on a memoir currently titled Becoming, pointed out that strong political leadership in fact has many parallels to good parenting – that it's about "temperament and patience".

"You do what you do because you know it’s the right thing to do, not because you’ll get credit for it, or because it says something about your personal legacy," she said.

"There are times in history when we feel like you’re going backward, but that’s part of the growth."

(Which goes for parenting too, surely.)

It's not the first time Obama has linked politics and parenthood. Earlier in the year at a Washington awards ceremony recognising school counsellors, she talked about the importance of solid role models in both arenas.

"Folks who model decency and dignity and integrity for our kids every single day," she said. "That more than anything is what shapes our children and that's what makes America great."

But despite her White House experience and insights, Obama ruled out the possibility of a presidential run for herself in the future.

"I don’t want to be President, I don’t think I should be President. I think I can do a lot of things, but that’s not one of them," she said at the conference.

"We have to find women who understand their gifts and know where to put them to use. I know what I’m good at."

Besides, she seemed to imply, it's someone else's turn.

"I think it’s gonna take young people, the next generation of leaders, to determine what they want to be."
