Lockdown in Pakistan to continue for another two weeks
Imran Khan, Prime Minister of Pakistan, on Tuesday announced the extension of the current lockdown in the country for another two weeks.
While addressing the nation, Khan said that this step has been taken to further contain the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
"We started this lockdown when the country just had 26 cases, and are planning to continue it for another two weeks at schools and public places. However, certain industries like construction, would be opened effectively tomorrow," Khan said.
He said that this was a unanimous decision taken by all the country's chief ministers and chief secretaries. There was an 89 per cent consensus on which industries to reopen.
Khan further said that: "the provinces were given autonomy after the 18th amendment to make their own decisions in such matters.
"If even now, provinces think they are not ready for this, it is up to them. The Centre will not impose its decision on them."
He continued saying that while looking at the worldwide trends, the government predicted deaths of some 190 people.
"Around 190 people should have died so far but we have less than half the number of deaths from the projected number.
"I would like to thank everyone for adhering to the guidelines but remember to exercise caution as this virus can spread rapidly at any time," Khan said.
