Another passenger also helps the brave flight attendant by pouring what appears to be orange juice onto the black bag, the clip shows.

The bag was later taken from the overhead bins and put in the lavatory, with experts removing it shortly afterwards.

The fire delayed the flight to Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport in East China by some three hours, with the replacement flight departing at 2:53pm local time.

China Southern Airlines said the flight attendant handled the incident "quickly, correctly."

The bag carrying the lithium-ion power bank belonged to a passenger who was detained for questioning by local police.

The power bank was not thought to have been in use when it burst into flames. The make and model of the device are currently unclear.
