Filipino Seafarer’s Family Cries Justice after He was mauled by a Greek National On-board

According to the victim’s family, the assailant was the ship owner’s nephew, who was known to be a violent person.

For a while before China took over, the Philippines was a top supplier of seafarers. Many Filipinos dreamt of working on a ship and travel the world while making big bucks. But becoming a seaman isn’t as easy as it seems. As a matter of fact, aspiring Filipino seamen are required to acquire degrees such as Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation and Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering or basic seaman course from maritime schools.

But the hardships don’t stop there. Once on board, seafarers suffer from motion sickness, and of course—homesickness. They have to adjust to the new set of “friends” they meet on board. These people will stay with them for at least 10 months a year, while they only get to spend at least a month or two with their own families.

That is why when the family of Nestor Alkuino, Sr., saw what happened to their father, they were enraged. According to Hymn Alkuino, her father was mauled by a Greek national named Nicolaos Malachias.

Though the reason behind the attack is still unknown, Hymn claims that the Greek national was the ship owner’s nephew, and is known to be very violent.

The ship’s crew was only able to bring Nestor to the hospital once they docked in Italy. According to Hymn, her father was rushed and confined at Bufalini Hospital Chirurgia Maxillo Facciale in Ravenna, Italy, and is “scheduled to undergo a plastic surgery due to a broken nose and cheekbones.”
