People Who Have Breakfast 5 To 7 Times A Week Have A Smaller Waistline Than Those Who Skipped

Are you one of the millions of people around the world that skips their breakfast? Considering that around 31 million in American alone skip breakfast, which amounts to about 10 percent of the U.S. population, according to a survey by the NPD Group, chances are that a lot of us are following suit.

Well, the old saying that breakfast might be one of the most vital meals during the day might be true, especially if your goal is to lose weight.

The most recent findings revealed that 26.7 per cent of people who skipped breakfast were obese, compared with 10.9 per cent of those who ate it frequently, the Xinhua reported.

In fact, the study also found that those who missed their breakfast had an average waist of 97.5 cm, 9.8 cm larger than those who had it five to seven times a week, even when age, gender and body mass were considered.

Besides, those who never ate breakfast self-reported the greatest weight gain over the past year.

"Infrequent breakfast consumption is associated with indices of central obesity and weight gain, with these associations being more evident in individuals who never eat breakfast," said researchers lead by Kevin Smith from Mayo Clinic in the US.

"Our findings on healthy adults are consistent with prior observations in the young,

corroborating the concept that regular consumption of this meal is an important and independent contributor of healthy weight at all ages," added the study.

People who ate their breakfast tend to have lower rates of heart diseases, blood pressure and high cholesterol, reports the American hearth association.

Starting your day without food can lead to a dip in energy, your performance/output, fatigue and mood swings. After all your brain uses up to 20% of the energy from food you consume during the day.

Skipping breakfast could also trigger a ‘metabolic syndrome’. This essentially means that your body tends to accumulate fat when you starve it over a period of time, in anticipation that there may be no more food coming into the system.

If you’re looking to skip a meal to lose weight, try to do skip lunch or dinner instead of breakfast, to burn more calories and to avoid hindering your metabolism.

Another recent research conducted by the University of Hohenhiem in Germany found that the skipping breakfast increased markers inflammations and insulin resistance, which are precursors of obesity and diabetes.

The study revealed that the calories burnt while skipping dinner was greater than skipping breakfast

in any case and had lesser repercussions to other health parameters.

Our metabolism and blood sugar control is better in the morning, making it more beneficial to eat more earlier in the day and lesser in the later half of the day, if you’re looking to skip meals.
