Top five things to do in Oman’s capital Muscat including the Royal Opera House and diving in the Gulf

3. Diving in the Gulf of Oman

With more than 1,000 miles of coastline, and inviting clear blue waters it's perhaps no surprise Oman is a great destination for diving.

The Arabian Sea is packed with eye-catching sea life, from sting rays and moray eels to turtles and barracuda.

If you're very lucky you may even spot a whale shark - but be warned that to 40ft long you're probably going to jump when one swims under your boat.

The excellent Oman Sail are one of a number of companies that operate diving trips.

Helpful, environmentally conscious staff accommodate all experience levels with trips seven days a week.

And if you're not a qualified diver you'll still have the chance to sink to the bottom of the deep as they offer taster sessions with a descent of up to 10 metres.

4. Ancient castles and forts

One thing you'll be quick to notice in Muscat is the sheer number of turrets and castles still standing.

In fact the whole country is dotted with these impressive stone fortifications, many dating back hundreds of years yet in remarkable condition.

More than 20 sites have been restored over the last two decades and they're well worth a few hours exploring.

Among them is the An N'aman Castle, half way between Muscat and Rustaq.

Built in the late 17th century as a country retreat, you can look round the whole castle to see how the other half once lived.

Al Hazam Castle is another must see, with its labyrinthine corridors and understated Islamic architecture.
